Our Story
Capitaline was founded in Brookings, South Dakota, in 2002, and in 2008 opened a second office in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Capitaline was founded by seasoned bankers and entrepreneurs who sought to share their wealth of experience from a history of investing in, building and operating successful companies. Almost nine years later, this continues to hold true, demonstrated by our investment success in farmland, agribusiness, renewable energy and financial services. Since its start, Capitaline has managed over $100 million across seven sponsored funds.
The name Capitaline comes from Capitaline Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome. Capitaline Hill served as the center for Roman leadership and governance. Our mark, the espontoon, is an evolution of the Roman spear. Roman soldiers used it to defend the empire for a thousand years. This spear evolved through military history to signify balance, quality and leadership. As such, it was adopted here in North America and used as a weapon carried by the battlefield commander, up to and including the American Revolution. General Washington and his officers are said to have had great confidence when armed with the espontoon in battle. Captain Meriwether Lewis later carried the Espontoon through the Dakotas in the fall of 1804, mapping the Missouri river and opening the west for settlement.
